Top Things to Do in Shores of Lake Erie
Cedar Point: The Roller Coaster Capital of the World
If you love roller coasters, Cedar Point is a bucket-list destination. Known as the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” this amusement park has 68 rides, including 18 record-breaking roller coasters like Millennium Force, Steel Vengeance, and Maverick. Beyond the coasters, you’ll find classic carnival rides, live entertainment, and delicious food. For families, there are plenty of kid-friendly attractions at Camp Snoopy, Kiddy Kingdom and Planet Snoopy. We spent most of our time in these areas and our daughter never got bored!

We visited Cedar Point during the 4th of July weekend and spent the entire day there from opening to closing. Fun fact: On July 4th and 5th, the park hosts spectacular fireworks shows in the evening! Our daughter had an amazing time, riding attractions all day long, and we had a blast too – though we were absolutely exhausted by the end. We had planned to check out the beach area, but we couldn’t tear our little one away from the rides! The beach and boardwalk section is accessible from the side of the main entrance. Additionally, the park offers various lodging options in the area, making it easy to extend your stay. Aside from roller coasters, there’s also a water park at Cedar Point – Cedar Point Shores Waterpark. We haven’t had the chance to experience it yet, but it looks like a fantastic place to cool off and have fun!
Travel tip: Download the Cedar Point mobile app. It helps you check ride wait times, height requirements for rides, park maps, and even restaurant menus, making your visit much smoother.

Put-in-Bay: Island Life on Lake Erie
Just a short ferry ride away, Put-in-Bay offers a fun and laid-back island vibe. The best way to explore? Rent a golf cart and cruise around the island! As soon as you step off the ferry, you’ll find plenty of places to rent one. I had never seen an island explored by a golf cart before, and it turned out to be such a fun way to get around!
You can start at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, where you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding islands. Then, dive into underground adventures at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center, home to a crystal-clear cave, gemstone mining, and even a butterfly house. For those who love the water, kayaking and jet skiing offer a thrilling way to explore the lake, while the island’s bars, wineries, and restaurants provide the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.
If you want to spend more than a day, you can also consider camping on the island, just like we did. The largest park on the island, South Bass Island State Park, offers cabins and campgrounds and features a public launch ramp for boats.

For me, the best part is to be able to swim. It has a small, rocky beach with a peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views. I love swimming, and since there aren’t many options for swimming in Columbus, spending time here brought me so much joy. Also, the sunsets… On a calm and warm summer evening, watching the sunset from your tent is an unforgettable experience.

African Safari Wildlife Park: A Wild Encounter

For a unique, family-friendly experience, visit African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. This drive-through safari lets you interact with exotic animals like giraffes, zebras, and bison – right from your car! Buy some food before starting the tour, and you might even get a giraffe to eat from your hand.

Beyond the drive-through experience, the park also offers a walk-through safari, where you can meet kangaroos, camels, and tortoises up close. This one-of-a-kind attraction is perfect for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking to add a little adventure to their Shores of Lake Erie itinerary.
